Pugs![]() ![]() | |
As stated by the AKC Pug colors are fawn (silvery tan to rich apricot with a black mask) and black. This breed can have lots of health problems. As with any bracheocephalic (smooshed face) dog, care needs to be taken in hot weather and with any anesthetic agents. Due to the shape of their face, many pugs snort and snore as a way of life; however, too much can be a sign of trouble. If left untreated this can lead to serious health problems. Some pugs need palate resection or nares (nasal openings) surgery. They can also have eye problems and may shed heavily. Pugs need to be with their people. They are easily motivated by food. Pugs were bred to be companions. That is their only job and they enjoy it. Pugs have very even temperaments and most even enjoy being dressed in costumes. They love to be with their people whether watching TV or going for walks. Because of their love for food, they can easily become overweight. To avoid health problems they should be kept at a healthy weight.

Boston TerriersAKC states Boston Terrier colors are black and white (black with white markings) brindle (fawn stripes over black with white markings) and seal (black with red undertones and white markings). Bostons share many of the same health problems with Pugs. They may also need palate resection and nares surgery. They are more susceptible to the cold than Pugs, but have the same problems with heat. Bostons can have a high level of energy and should be exercised regularly. Like Pugs and Boxers they need "people time" and can be unhappy if left alone. Bostons are smart and love to play games. They also prefer to sleep under the blankets, especially in cold weather.

Boxers![]() Boxer colors are fawn (shades of tan to mahogany) flashy fawn (fawn with 1/3 or less white markings) brindle (black stripes on a fawn background) reverse brindle (fawn stripes on a black background) white (white markings over 1/3 of the body) and black. Neither white nor black dogs are allowed in the AKC. While the black coloring is rare a few puppies do display it with white markings. The occurrence of white Boxers is much more common due to breeders breeding for a flashy fawn color. An average of two in ten Boxer puppies are white. In years past, most white Boxer puppies were destroyed; however, now breeders are allowed to place them in homes as long as they are spayed or neutered. White Boxers should not be bred. As with many other dog breeds, the predominance of white can be a sign of deafness or blindness. Some white Boxers may be sensitive to the sun, however if you look at a white Boxer's skin beneath their fur they have "freckles" patches of fawn skin. Few white boxers are albinos. Boxers are prone to separation anxiety and should not be left alone for long periods of time. They require lots of "people time". Boxers can be sensitive to anesthesia and should only be anesthetized with certain anesthetic agents. The breed is also prone to cardiomyopathy and cancer. Boxers are natural clowns and if you do not play with them they will invent their own games. They are content to snuggle and prefer to sleep with you at night. Boxers need regular exercise, however they are capable of being a total couch potatoes.
